New Look for FrenchCosmetics.Net

Our site now has new look.   For those technically inclined it css based which not only gives a cleaner look, but is also largely w3c compliant.   This means that it is much more web friendly for all sorts of purposes not the least of which making it easier for users and search engines to find.  In particular you should check out  our Bioderma page, which again is w3c compliant.

We are also working on updating a lot of our images and product lines.  The bottom line is that our look may have changed, but we are still offering the same old-fashioned customer service for products like Bioderma, Filorga, Somatoline, Noreva and much much more, all at reasonable, fair prices.

Look Good + Feel Good!

Focus on Avene Skin Recovery Cream

An interesting product from Avene is their Skin Recovery Cream. Also known at Cream for Intolerant Skins, a translation of the French name 'Creme Pour Peaux Intolerantes' or CPI for short. As you can see from the reviews below and as for all cosmetics products, it doesn't work for all people all the time. Still it can be very effective and the reviews list some of the problems helped. One interesting review highlights a point that we make all time. The reviewer was very happy with the item purchased in Europe and then disappointed with the same product purchased in Canada. As unabashed francophiles, we of course maintain that cosmetics made in France for the French market are superior. There is for example anecdotal evidence that the Avene Hand Cream for sale at some US drugstores is not as good a quality as those available in France. The review apparently had a a similar experience with the CPI cream. Still we will always lose this argument against the customer who wants the product NOW and can deal with any modifications made for the local market. For you to judge, as always"

I never thought an Avene product would work for me, since everything I've tried so far hasn't. Then while I was on a trip in Europe, I had this horrible allergic reaction on my face, and my skin was red, rough, itchy, just horrible. The anti-allergic gel they gave me was leaving it even drier, so I went back to the pharmacy for some moisturizer. Avene had a huge display, so I just picked this cream, it just...looked appealing at the moment. Well, it's become my HG moisturizer. It literally saved my face because the irritation subsided soon after I started applying this cream, and I was able to put on foundation without it looking like a pancake. I kept using the tube, now I'm 2 months into it and I still use it nightly, and I've been waking up to the nicest skin I've ever had - even, no pimples, smooth, soft and moisturized but not greasy. I used to be oily now I'm combo, and this little tube works amazingly on me! I will most definitely buy again, when I'm done with this one. Although it may not happen for a long time, because I haven't even used a quarter of it! EDIT JUNE 2013: I will leave the high marks I'd given this previously, because that tube was really THAT good, but if I were to rate the new version (bought in Canada 3-4 months ago) I would give it a 2! This new version (or maybe because it's not the Euro one) is not even close to my first tube. It makes me oily, my skin doesn't look calm, and I suspect it gave me some pimples. It just doesn't feel right, and I bought both the regular and the rich versions. Not to mention the packaging, the top gets nasty with product accumulation which dries and it's just...ugh. Hate it. Why did they have to change an awesome product???

I have sensitive fair skin, prone to flushing in cheeks, dryness and general irritation. With consistent use (and sleep!), this product diminishes them all and makes me glow. I always think "oh, there's probably something better for my skin out there" and try new products, but end up coming back to this. Ie. I just tried the Dermalogica Ultra Calming line, which broke my forehead out with over 50-60 of those tiny skin colored bumps. Three days back on this and they're all gone, 99% smooth. This is the only product I actually run out of and re-buy. HG. Thanks Avene, my skin wouldn't be the same without this.

This is a review for the Rich version (Rich Skin Recovery Cream). I have struggled to find a rich moisturiser for my very dry, VERY blemish-prone, mildly sensitive skin for years. All the rich moisturisers were comodogenic, and it just seemed to me like all the non-comodogenic/anti-acne products were geared towards oily skin types, so I just put up with those products and watched my skin spiral into pimply, flakey disrepair. Then two months ago I decided to spend a little more than I normally would on a moisturiser (I'm but a poor uni student). The price point's a little much here in Australia, where it's AU$40 for a little 40mL tube (it's $31 at Chemist Warehouse though!). But it's worth every penny - my skin is happier and healthier than it has been in years, and no breakouts (except for the occasional pimple because of a topical antibiotic I'm using). It says to use it until your skin is back to its normal balance, but when I don't use it, my skin's still dry and tight. And realistically speaking, no moisturiser can permanently change your skin type. My skin feels supple and balanced, perfectly hydrated but not at all greasy. This is quite possibly my HG moisturiser!

Product Alert from Avene

Avene Product of Interest - Winner of BT Award 2012-2013

The Avene Hydrance line of products have been a staple of this laboratory for many years Recently however a popular trend is for moisturizers to have sun protection, which is what Avene has added to the Hydrance line. Now you can have the moisturing properties of the Hydrance line with SPF20 UV protection. Note that for those Francophile consumers who like to buy the Made in France for the French market, will note that the SPF on the Hydrance line is SPF20, whereas the American version is SPF 25. At FrenchCosmetics.Net, of course you will only find the SPF20 French line.

The popularity and value of the UV/moisturizer combination was confirmed this year when the Hydrance Legere - for Normal Skins received the BT awards, an award given by the influential French Review site Beaute-Test.Com

See the following blurb on how the awards are given:

Each member has voted in each category for their favorite product. More than 33,000 votes were cast in the seventh round of 22 January 2013 to 25 February 2013. We present here the results of votes. In each product category, you can see the first three products BT-elected Awards. Certain categories rather special did not collect enough votes to provide representative results. BT-Awards is fundamentally different from other rankings that you can read in the press and in advertisements. Here, all the products involved in the voting. There are no fees, no entry fee to participate. Classification is therefore done on all products listed and not only among some who agreed to pay for the label. Another difference is that the votes are disinterested and do not earn points or opportunities to participate in a draw. How can we establish a sincere when ranking each entry gives a chance to win the selected product? The vote is obviously representative of the year 2012, with a participation of 22 January 2013 to 25 February 2013. You can see the rankings of the best products in 2013 and even 2014! Do not be fooled.

Discover Hydrobrio from Bioderma

The best way to find out about a product is to see what other users are saying - here's what some people say about  Bioderma Hydrabrio line of products:

"Okay ladies, I will be completely honest with you! Have you ever felt clueless about what to do with your dehydrated skin ( dry skin )!!!??? I wish i had known about the Bioderma products when I was younger, because this stuff is insane! I live in Canada & let me tell you, the weather here is quite confusing, especially during our cold blizzarding winters, my skin changes like the weather does! I have extremely dry skin so for me these products worked! Now don't think i only got myself this cream, i had to get the whole dang family!! If anyone's interesting in knowing what i did for my skin, inbox me and i will gladly explain to you which products i've used in the Bioderma line and how i used it".

"I brought this light cream because it was recommended by Lisa Eldridge's French pharmacy favorites video, her recommendations are very comprehensive & professional. On to the product, it is a light weight cream for sensitive & dehydrated skin, although my skin is mostly oily, I often feel dehydrated in winter indoor heat & outdoor dry weather, I love how lightweight Hydrobio Legere is, it penetrates really quick & well, it doesn't break me out or make me feel greasy, it provides lightweight, breathable moisture. I use Hydrobio Legere on top of La roche posay's Effclear Duo, I noticed that my skin is less oily & less tight after changing to this routine. Hydrobio Legere doesn't promise a million things (whitening, anti-aging, firm, etc) but it does the basics exceptionally well! Too bad Bioderma's products are hard to find in the U.S".

"If you have active acne or any acne, do not use this product. This product smells nice and it's a decent moisturizer and can be use for sensitive skin but not for acne skin. When i used this product, my acne became so red and irritated. It was terrible and I had to remove it. I thought it was because i was sensitive to this product but i use it on my neck and the areas of my skin with no acne and it seem to be fine. Just be careful when using this product".

Have you yet discovered Bioderma H2O? Ubiquitous product in French parapharmacies

Look at  some reviews have to say about the Bioderma Crealine H2O Micellar Solution DUO-2 x 500ml-Most popular format

I use makeup every weekday for work and I love how this product takes everything right off. I just put some on a small cotton pad and it removes the foundation, eye shadow, concealor and mascara off very gently and thoroughly. I have combination skin and this product doesn't dry out my cheeks at all. I am also a contact lens wearer with sensitive eyes and this is the best product so far that I have found that removes all my eye makeup thoroughly. It is an amazing product because I don't know how it works without having oils or alcohol in it. It never leaves residue on my skin.
A little goes a long way and my bottle lasted me several months despite daily use. Definitely worth the investment. Now my skin is always clean before I go to bed and I have less problems with clogged pores etc. Buy it!

I was glad to find this product. This is a product that is ubiquitous in the French pharmacies, but not easy to find here. I saw this product recommended by Lisa Eldridge just as the other reviewers are. If you search the web, you will see many similar ringing endorsements for this amazing product.

The product has no scent and the texture is remarkably like water! I am no scientist and don't really no what micellization is, but whatever it is, it makes for an amazing cleanser.
I haven't used a soap-based facial cleanser for a long time, and my usual cleansing routine is the Shu Uemura oil cleanser. The Shu Uemura oils are really expensive, over $70 USD. I found the Bioderma Crealine (also known as Sensibio now) to be a great alternative (and cheaper) to my old routine. I find it very effective for removing even heavy eye makeup and dark lip colors. When I soak cotton pads and place them over my eyes and gentle press to release the product on my lids, the dark shadows, gel eyeliners and mascara lift easily into the cotton pads. There is no need to scrub vigorously to get the makeup off. It is not as fast and easy on waterproof mascara, but does take a few more times to get it off. It comes off, just takes longer. In that case, I will use a separate bi-phasic eye makeup remover.

It will also take off foundation, any sunscreen, base product off the rest of your face. You will be amazed at how much gunk comes off. I rinse with water afterwards and my face feels completely clean and refreshed with no dryness or any irritation.  I think I've found a lifetime cleasing product!

Lisa Eldridge strongly recommends this product so I recently bought it. It is an incredible cleanser and does a brilliant job at completely cleaning up the skin and preventing blocked pores and breakouts.

I absolutely love Bioderma Crealine H2O! I would most definitely re-order this product. I have very sensitive skin and this did not aggravate my skin at all. I use it at least once a day. It wipes away all your make up, even water proof mascara. I would tell anyone who wants a mild cleanser and make up remover to order this. You won't reget it!

ordered this Bioderma Crealine H20 Micelle Solution after seeing it featured on Lisa Eldridge's YouTube channel on her cleansing routine. I was familiar with micellar water, using one by YSL in the past. I preferred this one over the (MUCH PRICIER) YSL. This is so gentle, it didn't irritate or dry out my skin at all, like the YSL product did. For reference, I have sensitive, combination skin which gets oily on my t-zone and dry in the cheeks near my mouth. This is great for removing ALL your makeup, from foundation to waterproof eyeliner and mascara. It's much more effective than eye makeup remover pads like Neutrogena and Almay, which made me feel like I was doing a lot of tugging and rubbing (NOT good for the delicate skin around your eye area). I simply put some of this solution on a facial cotton or cotton ball, and gently press it against my eye for about 10 seconds, giving it some time to start dissolving the makeup, then I gently wipe and most, if not all, of my makeup is gone! Then I repeat if needed. I am impressed with this product and I hope to never be without it!

Not everyone likes it…"I have been looking for a cleanser that wasn't harsh on my sensitive skin and would remove my makeup without leaving my face greasy. I read the Bioderma reviews and decided to give it a shot. I have to say that I am extremly disappointed. It felt like I was just applying water on my face. Bioderma did not remove my makeup.  I would not recommend this product.<BR><BR>

I don't know why I waited so long to try this. No rubbing off eye makeup anymore. At almost 40 that's a good thing.

This is much less expensive than the Lancome cleansing water I have used for years and does the same thing. I much prefer cleansing water than soap or a foamy product; it's gentler.

New Products from La Roche Posay

La Roche Posay - Old Line Cosmetics with soothing Thermal Water

Having spend several days at the La Roche Posay resort in France, I can speak of this product with some personal reflection.   The resort itself is 'resort' French-style with a handul of modest bungalow-type rooms surrounding a sizeable pool consisting of water from the thermal springs that have a produced the world-wide La Roche Posay cosmetics behemoth that it is today.

La Roche Posay is available in various outlets in the USA.   This is a mixed blessing, a kind of Catch-22.  Although it available of necessity the products have to go through the  FDA approval process.   As the FDA is notoriously slow in approving advances in cosmetics this probably means that the La Roche Posay products available in the USA are not the most advanced products available.

For the 'average' consumer this again is not a problem.  Go to Walgreens or CVS and you can probably get what you need.  For the more discriminating or like us, the Francophone among us who believe that everything French is better, your best best for La Roche Posay is probably a site like FrenchCosmetics.Net that only provides the French formulae and usually at comparable prices, but as with all good things getting these items from France is not an instant-gratification thing and need some patience.

Vichy - Season-End Sunscreen Review

If you visit the French Vichy website, you will immediately notice that their sunscreen range is show as a new product range.  What is new on closer examination is that they too have eliminated parabens.  So it looks as though consumers will have to forget about whatever texture sunscreens used to have with the old paraben-included formulaes and get used to the new textures from Vichy and all other major sunscreen makers such as Avene and Bioderma

New Idealia Products from Vichy

When old-line French cosmetic company Vichy  introduces a new product you had better sit up and take notice.  Vichy has recently introduced four additions to its Idealia line - two BB creams in light and medium shades, a brown spot cream and a serum that is possibly generating the most attention. You can find more details at the links below;

Vichy Idealia BB Cream SPF25 Claire Shade -40ml

Vichy Idealia BB Cream SPF25 Medum Shade -40ml

Vichy Idealia Life Serum -30ml

Vichy Idealia Pro Deep Brown Spot Corrector -30ml

and the old, but not that old Idealia items

Vichy and Avene - Made in France vs Made for the USA

As the oldest and most established skin care companies out of France, Avene and Vichy suffer from the same malady.   While they both have solid product lines and have myriads of faithful followers, Avene and Vichy have image problems - not-innovators, stodgy, slow to introduce new products etc.

As unabashed Francophiles, we see another issue that they are the most likely to be imitated by cheap fakes from 'elsewhere' and they also make products specifically aimed at different markets.  For those skeptics among we don't need to remark that with the FDA in the US so slow to accept innovative products, the impression given is that Avene and Vichy products available officially in the USA have of necessity been  to adhere to most stringent and very likely out-of-date product ideals.  It is the nature of the best that American consumers are at the same time the most protected from harmful products and the most deprived of new products for a long time.

Hence for the average US customer for Avene and Vichy we say 'no matter' - go for the best price at the most convenient local supplier.  For the more discriminating consider francophone suppliers like FrenchCosmetics.Net

Brown Spot Cream - New from Avene

More and more cosmetics companies are discovering the market for cream for eliminating or reducing or protecting from sun, brown spots. Old line French Skin Care company Avene  is no different and has com with its D-Pigment lne one for normal skins  and one for dry skins

Avene is old line and very solid and always worth considering.

Avene Thermal Water - Does it Make a Difference?

As a supplier of cosmetics products, I am perhaps the most critical of customers.  Also old-fashioned.  When I shave I spurn the use of machines and shave with a razor - not the old fashioned blade - I am not quite that kind of antique - but with a hand razor, and then I get the cheapest - the yellow BIC.  With that in mind I would normally use the local CVS/Walgreens shaving foam, but a few years ago I decided with no a little scepticism to try the Avene Shaving Cream - 'for use with a brush - also I forewent the hand smear and purchased an old-time shaving brush.

Does the Avene make a difference?

My conclusion is that it has a definite soothing effect on the skin and actually well worth the price.

Avene Sunscreens and Parabens - Following or Leading?

As one of the old-established cosmetics laboratories one would expect that Avene would be at the forefront of the trend to abandon parabens in its product and they do not disappoint.   Although the ill-effects of parabens are as yet not concluive, the European cosmetics makers have pro-active to dump this preservative.   Avene has not fallen behind.  You can check out their impressive and comprensive range at FrenchCosmetics.Net .   The following are some of their popular items.

Avene Suncare SPF50 Spray-200ml

Avene Suncare SPF50 Emulsion-Fragrance Free -50ml popular item for normal to combination skins

and see the rest of the Avene Sun  Protection range here

Enjoy and be careful in the sun!

New Product Line from Avene

When venerable old-line cosmetics laboratory Pierre Fabre makes an addition to its Avene line, someone had better take notice as Avene is an well-established brand with proven products and rarely experiments and therefore rarely need to add to subtract from its product offering.

Hence take notice of its new Xeracalm line in three models meant for Atopic skins:

Avène XeraCalm AD Lipid-Replenishing Balm 200ml

Avène XeraCalm AD Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil 400ml

Avène XeraCalm AD Lipid-Replenishing Cream 200ml

Hope this helps some.

Avene - Skin Care Product Line Rooted in the 18th Century

The Avene product line traces its roots back to 1736 when the Marquis of Rocozel was successfully treated for itching by submersing himself in the Avene thermal waters.  In 1874 the Avene waters were declared a public asset.

And so it went until 1990 when 20th Century capitalism led to the creation of Avene Laboratories and an extensive product line based on the healing effects of Avene thermal water.  And the rest is skin care history.

Check out the following examples of Avene products:

Anti Redness Cream - comes in Rich and Light

Sunscreens - of course

Anti Aging - Check out Eluage and Ystheal and Serenage

Foundation - see Couvrance line under Avene

Bioderma Product Update

At the end of the sun season it seems appropriate to review the Bioderma sunscreen range and the Bioderma line any general for any product updates or changes.

The trend away from Parabens, which is commonly used preservative in cosmetics, continues and consumers are having mixed reactions.  Are Parabens really bad for you?  The jury is still out on this one and it appears to no conclusive answer is available.    Still it has not stopped companies like Bioderma which is arguably the leading sunscreen laboratory in Europe from removing it from their products.

For the US public which is in the 13th year of awaiting sunscreen innovations like Tinosorb to be approved for use in sunscreens in the USA, the shift away from parabens must be confusing.   Not yet able to use Tinosorb-based products, they must now focus on whether to use paraben-preserved products or not.

Based on a quick survey of Photoderm from Bioderma there are no parabens to found anywhere.   However some of the clients of FrenchCosmetics.Net have been quite vocal about dissatisfaction with the texture of the new products.   Texture is obviously an important part of the sunscreen selection process, as evidenced by the myriad of sunscreen types offered by Bioderma - Fluid, Lotion, Spray, Cream etc etc.   Are consumer comforts being relegated to a health concern that might affect a minute part of the population?   Time will tell...

Elsewhere Bioderma follows what some see as an annoying tendency to remove well-loved products for reasons unknown.  To whit the Bioderma Sebium AI anti-irritant cream is gone, apparently replaced with the Bioderma Sebium Tinted 2 in 1 and as any cosmetics afficianodo will tell, tinted is not for everyone...

Purchasing Cosmetics from France in the USA - Fresh or NOW!

The American consumer is accustomed to being catered to, and quickly.   Amazaon recently introdued a one-hour product delivery.  Pizza can be had in 20 minutes and of course McDonald can provide a full mea in less than 5 minutes.   At FrenchCosmetics.Net we understand this mentality.

However with French skin care products such as Bioderma, Ducray, Galenic, Filorga, Somatoline, Vichy, A-Derma etc instant gratification comes into direct conflict with another concept that is not so much part of the America phychi as it is with the French - the concept of freshness.  Most of the French products have expiration dates.  Having said that, the American consumer has to ask her or himself the question, " If I would like to get fresh skin care products from France, and I can get the item from say E-Bay or Amazon with 1 day shipping, WHEN did the item get here from France and how fresh is it?   The answer is of course that IF it is from France it obviously got here some time ago and is definitely NOT the freshest available.  Did it arrive in the US yesterday, the day before, two months ago - who knows?

FrenchCosmetics.Net unashamedly and proudly does not cater to the CVS-Walgreens-instant-gratification crowd - though FrenchCosmetics.Net certainly does understand the mindset.  FrenchCosmetics.Net orders once a week from suppliers in France - the very same suppliers that are providing fresh Bioderma, Ducray, Galenic, Filorga, Somatoline, Vichy, A-Derma etc to parapharmacies in France - and then only to satisfy orders it has from customers.   There FrenchCosmetics.Net customer enjoy the same products delivery on a 3 week lag that they would expect to see walking into any parapharmacie in Paris, Lyon or Marseilles, except that FrenchCosmetics.Net is by having access to several suppliers has a large selection of products than most parapharmacies.   American tourists who have tried to shop for a hard-to-find skin care product in France will know exactly what this is like.   There are parapharmacies and parapharmacies - some corner stores and some larger.   FrenchCosmetics.Net has it all - if you can't get it from them, you probably can't get it anywhere and fresh too!

Bioderma and Sensibio

Be careful what you buy.  There are stories about counterfeit products in cosmetics as with any other products in demand.  Bioderma sells the very popular H2O products.  For consumers in the US, Bioderma is no officially available, the question should be asked as to where the Bioderma products they are buying are coming from?

Some clues can be found in the H2O products.   Bioderma sells this item in both the Crealine and Sensibio names.  Therefore if you are buying Bioderma Crealine or Bioderma Sensibio, you might be buying two products that come from completely different places. Crealine is sold in France and other French-speaking countries while Sensibio is sold in Australia and Asia.   Asia of course includes China and as China is notorious for producing fake products, any product purporting to come from China ought to be view with some caution.   That is not to say that all Bioderma purportedly coming from Asia is necessarily fake, but some caution should be exercised.

FrenchCosmetics.Net only offers the French lines and there you can only get Crealine.  Personally we are biased and Francophonic - naturally we prefer all things French!

Europe's Better Sunscreens

According to the Environmental Working Group, a research organization, "Americans have fewer choices and notably poorer protection from ultraviolet A rays than Europeans – mainly because of the federal Food and Drug Administration’s repeated delays.
FDA sunscreen rules that went into effect last December allow nearly every product to be marketed as “broad spectrum,” a term that implies good UVA protection.
But more than half of the 750 beach and sport sunscreens reviewed by EWG are too weak for the European market, where manufacturers voluntarily comply with a European Union recommendation that all sunscreens provide meaningful UVA protection".

Fortunately FrenchCosmetics.Net is able to help US customers obtain supplies of the leading sunscreens from Europe such as Bioderma, Avene, Uriage, Ducray

Action has been pending in the US on approving ingredients used in the European brands for SEVEN YEARS and counting.  Pity American sunbathers looking for great sun protection!

More specifically you can find the full range of sunscreens from  Bioderma, Avene, Uriage, Ducray below

Somatoline - Slim While You Sleep

Okay so this one is not from France but from Italy - and it looks very good!

Don't believe you can lose weight in your sleep. Check out the following in the September 2012 issue of Allure magazine: A skin cream has proven effective at reducing fat deposits, according to a report in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science. A team of researchers led by Enzo Berardesca at the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome tested a formula containing caffeine, shea butter, mineral salts, and extracts from algae and seaweed. Women who applied it on their waist, hips, and thighs nightly for four weeks lost one to two centimeters, up to slightly less than an inch, from each area, the researchers found. The product (Somatoline Cosmetics Intensive Night Slimming Treatment, which is available in Europe) stimulates the breakdown of fat molecules and the draining of fluids, Berardesca says; growth hormone released during sleep enhances effects in the skin, he adds.

Any doubts about these products?  Look at the faces of French women who reputedly never wash their faces with water.

Product Alert:   We are wondering about the 'new' pump design and where it comes from.  Certainly not from France.   We just received a shipment from France and no design change there.  Hope its not a fake, but it does look very cool!
